Such a decision was made under an order of National Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas, the army said on Wednesday.

Naming military units after Lithuanian kings, grand dukes and other historical personalities is aimed at ensuring the continuity of the historical connection, fostering the army's traditions, promoting interest in its history, and commemorating those with merits to the country, the army said.

The communications battalion was established on January 1, 2019 on the basis of three communications companies of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.

The battalion's key task is to ensure security of connection among units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces thus enabling the chief for defense to execute command and control.

In July, Major Jurgita Savickaite was appointed to lead the communications battalion and became the first woman in Lithuania to be appointed to lead an army battalion.
