The six-classroom school equipped with necessary educational tools and high-quality equipment would be attended by 161 schoolchildren, the Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday.

Lithuania earlier allocated 150,000 euros for the construction of this primary school in the light of the needs of the Yazidi community, which suffered genocide at the hands of the Islamic State in 2014, and in view of Lithuania’s directions of development cooperation in the Middle East countries.

“By helping children who have suffered from war to get back to schools, we are helping to create their safer and more stable future, provide conditions for parents to integrate in the labor market in their country. In this respect, investment in education is one of the most meaningful,” the press release quoted Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis as saying.

The project was implemented by Nadia’s Initiative, an international intergovernmental organization that seeks to rebuild the Yazidi community of Sinjar and to support the provision of educational, healthcare and social services.

The Foreign Ministry has also allocated 127,000 euros from its development cooperation and democracy promotion budget to another educational project in Iraq – the Middle East Science Program implemented since 2018.
