"I hope that our colleagues could change their minds a little bit and we still have a possibility of compromise at the table. Sometimes you get this compromise at the last minute," the president told reporters in Brussels ahead of the European Council meeting.

Both gas and electricity prices need caps to fight against high energy prices, Nauseda said.

"We need caps on national gas prices in wholesale transactions and on energy generation. Those measures are still under discussion right now and I expect that we will come to some conclusions and decisions," the Lithuanian president said.

In his words, the EU has an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity in search of common solutions.

"If we're looking for resources or for measures which could help us nationally, we also have to look for EU measures, because otherwise, it will be difficult to avoid market distortions. We can have solidarity we are talking about very often. This is critically important," he said. "This is a decision of 27 EU countries and 15 countries have already expressed willingness very clearly, but of course, we have found a common denominator."

Earlier this week, the European Commission proposed joint gas purchases and introducing a dynamic price cap, but only for transactions on the Dutch TTF exchange, and not for all wholesale gas purchases as Lithuania and some other EU countries proposed.

Speaking with BNS earlier, Asta Skaisgiryte, the Lithuanian president's senior foreign policy adviser, said Lithuanian was in favor of a European-level mechanism on the compensation of the difference between the gas market price and a gas price cap. However, mostly richer western and northern countries are against a gas price cap as they will in fact have to fund the price difference.

Commenting on the EC's recent proposals, Lithuanian Energy Minister Dainius Kreivys said a gas price cap should be set automatically as prices rise, and not when the Commission decides.

EU energy ministers are scheduled to meet in Luxembourg next week to discuss the implementation of the Commission regulation.
