The second defendant, in this case, ex-Lithuanian Ambassador to Russia Rimantas Sidlauskas, also died in September. He was found guilty of influence peddling and fined 16,500 euros.

As Russian citizen Rinat Nasyrov remains the only alive person convicted in this case, a Vilnius court is now looking into the grounds for his conviction.

On Wednesday, a three-judge panel of the Vilnius Regional Court heard the case under the appeal procedure.

Sidlauskas's lawyer Gediminas Bukauskas had filed an appeal against his client's conviction. Following the client's death, the lawyer asked the court to annul the verdict and drop the case against his client.

The judges said a ruling would be made on Sidlauskas' status in this case, adding that Bukauskas was now excused from further participation in the proceedings.

Nasyrov also lodged an appeal with the Vilnius Regional Court against the verdict issued by the Vilnius City District Court on March 1, asking to be acquitted. The appeal will be heard on November 14.

Sidlauskas, a former diplomat and businessman, was accused of illegally helping two Russian citizens, Nasyrov and his son, obtain visas.

In March, Sidlauskas was initially fined 17,500 by the Vilnius City District Court, but the fine was reduced by 1,000 because he spent ten days in custody.

Nasyrov, a Russian banker, was also sentenced and fined 15,000, but the fine was reduced to 13,700 as he also spent 13 days in custody.

The Russian citizen was released on 300,000 bail, and the money has not yet been returned.

The third defendant, in this case, Bieliauskas, died while the case was still in court. He was acquitted by the court's verdict as not having committed an act constituting a crime or criminal offense. His son will receive the previously paid 10,000 euro bail.
