The Social Democratic Party (LSDP) announced that the politician would be laid to rest in Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius on Thursday.

Sakalas, born on 6 July 1931, was imprisoned in 1949-1954 for anti-Soviet activities. He finished school in 195 and studied at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (now Kaunas University of Technology) in 1955-1960. Later, after becoming a professor in physics and mathematics, he was the author of 16 discoveries and 150 scientific papers.

Sakalas was a member of the Supreme Council in 1990-1992, a member of the Seimas in 1992-2004 and a member of the European Parliament in 2004-2009.

President Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and Chairwoman of the LSDP Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, among others, expressed condolences over the passing of Sakalas.
