“I realise that hotheads have various proposals now. Some suggest closing pipelines, others cutting railway tracks or doing something else. Yet this is not a matter which the Government would be considering today,” Šimonytė told reporters Monday.

The head of Government reiterated that transit between Russia and its Kaliningrad Oblast is regulated by European agreements.

“I understand everyone’s inflamed passions over the transit of sanctioned goods, yet I would suggest not to forget that an agreement between the Republic of Lithuania, the European Union and the Russian Federation exists on simplified transit procedures,” said Šimonytė.

When the European Commission issued additional guidance on transit last week, allowing some sanctioned goods to be transported to and from Kaliningrad Oblast by rail, proposals emerged in the public sphere to dismantle railway tracks leading to Kaliningrad.
