"As soon as it was launched, if I'm not mistaken, in the first days of May, the National Defense Ministry's website came under a massive cyber attack five days later," the minister told reporters on Wednesday, without providing information on who was behind the attack or its consequences.

"Obviously, we are capable of countering it, but the fact is that it happens all the time," Anusauskas said.

Lithuania's National Cyber Security Center recorded 1,020 cyber incidents in the first quarter of this year, up from 981 incidents a year ago, the ministry says.

Anusauskas points out that not only the number of attacks is going up, but they are also becoming more sophisticated.

Last year's number of cyber attacks remained similar to that of 2020.

Anusauskas says Lithuania needs to invest more in cyber security because "national defense cannot provide all state institutions with what they need".
