It was announced on Wednesday night that the world premiere of the documentary about the city devastated by the ongoing Russian war will take place on May 17 as part of the official special screening program, Cannes Premieres.

Mariupol 2 is Kvedaravicius' second documentary he started but not completed before his death.

The documentary is "a mosaic of everyday moments in a city at war", the LFC said.

Kvedaravicius' first Mariupol documentary was first made in 2016 and premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, in the Panorama section, and has also been screened at international festivals in Hong Kong, Warsaw, Lausanne and Nyon.

Kvedaravicius was killed in the Russian-occupied part of Mariupol.

Born in 1976, Kvedaravicius made Barzakh, an award-winning documentary about war-torn Chechnya and its disappearing population, in 2011. In 2016, his documentary Mariupol was selected for the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2019, his first feature film Parthenon was selected for the Venice Film Festival's Film Critics' Week.
