A representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry informed Lithuania, Ambassador to Russia Eitvydas Bajarunas when the latter was summoned to the ministry, the ministry said.

The ambassadors of Latvia and Estonia were also summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry as the two Baltic countries also expelled three Moscow diplomats each earlier in March. Russia is expelling the same number of diplomats from these countries.

The three Baltic states announced their coordinated move to send a number of Russian diplomats out on March 18. The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said the decision was made "in solidarity with Ukraine, which has been facing the unprecedented Russian military aggression".

The Baltic states also stated that the activities of the expelled persons were incompatible with their diplomatic status. Such wording is usually used when intelligence officers working under diplomatic cover are being sent out of the country.
