Kristina Meide, head of the Lithuanian Red Cross, says some 11,300 refugees have already arrived in Lithuania.

"Today, we have over 3,000 volunteers working in a variety of activities. Our main goal is to help people who have already arrived in Lithuania. According to the latest data, there are 11,300 of them. The worrying thing is that the number is going up by one thousand a day, we can see that not only additional hands but also additional humanitarian aid will definitely be needed," Meide told a press conference on Sunday.

Edmundas Jakilaitis, one of the initiators of the volunteer coordination centre "Strong Together", said that the most difficult places for refugees to find accommodation at the moment were Vilnius and Klaipeda.

"At the moment, the most difficult places for us to find apartments are Vilnius and Klaipeda, and, of course, all over Lithuania," Jakilaitis told the press conference.

When it comes to finding housing, priority is given to vacant flats in city or town centers, or houses where the owners do not live, he said. The second priority is vacant properties with in-living owners but also one or two spare rooms.

"And only then we divert people to cramped flats, those 40 square-meter apartment," Jakilaitis said.

"Strong Together" has also set up a refugee centre in Poland on the border with Ukraine, which is expected to remain open until at least March 23.

3-4 buses are sent from the refugee centre to Lithuania every day, and 6-7 minibuses are sent from different points on the Polish-Ukrainian border to the centre.

According to Meide, the Red Cross, together with Caritas, the Order of Malta, the Food Bank and Save the Children, has so far raised 2.5 million euros for Ukraine.
