A local prosecutor says it's probably the biggest bribe found in Lithuania. He also confirmed that the bribe had been paid by the executive of Autokausta.

"Yesterday morning, officers of the Special Investigation Service started a search at the address of the director of Kaunas administration. (...) As the bribe was only found in the evening, the amount is currently the largest in Lithuania as a bribe – 140,000euros," Tomas Staniulis, chief prosecutor of the Organzsed Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor's Office, said on Thursday.

"In total, almost a quarter of a million in cash was found," he added.

On Wednesday, Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijosaitis suspended Siliauskas from his duties.

Representing the ruling "United Kaunas" movement, Siliauskas has been the head of the Kaunas City Municipality administration since November, 2018, when he replaced the then head of the administration who resigned.

According to the investigation, Siliauskas may have accepted a bribe from the director of an unnamed company in exchange for construction and related works contracts.

The bribe was allegedly handed in early Wednesday morning and a pre-trial investigation was opened on the same day.
