They would also discuss the security situation in the region, activation of NATO’s defense plans and the measures of deterrence, the Lithuanian Armed Forces said in a press release.

The meeting will also be attended by Christopher G. Cavoli, the commanding general of US Army Europe and Africa, and Lieutenant General Juergen-Joachim von Sandrart, the commander of the Multinational Corps Northeast.

NATO activated its defense plans for allied countries after Russia attacked Ukraine last week.

It is the first time the alliance has publicly said it is activating its defense plans, which were drawn up after Russia’s 2014 invasion and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula.

This will enable the Alliance to deploy its rapid response force in Central and Eastern Europe.

Created in 2003, the NATO Response Force is made up of 40,000 personnel and includes an 8,000-strong high-readiness contingent with air, sea and special operations soldiers that can be deployed within days.
