"In our contacts with the capital of Ukraine, our partner city since 1991, we can clearly see how much they need moral support today, which is now best demonstrated by a physical arrival," the mayor posted on Facebook.

"I am very happy that Europe stands united. My colleagues from Warsaw and Prague have just been to Kyiv. I will be followed by the mayor of Riga, and hopefully by other mayors to whom I spoke by phone yesterday and who expressed their support for Ukraine," he added.

Simasius expects to meet with Kyiv's officials to discuss possible humanitarian channels and assistance if needed.

"Of course, the mayor of Kyiv and I will also speak about cooperation once this crazy crisis caused by the Kremlin is over: about education, streets, urban innovation, Vilnius' anniversary," he said.

Simasius said he had assessed all possible risks and discussed his visit with the Foreign Ministry and the Lithuanian embassy to Ukraine.
