"There are 55 people on strike today," Achema spokeswoman Jolita Macelyte told BNS on Monday. "People are gradually returning to work. The plant is operating as normal."

Last Friday, the management said that 98 people were on strike.

Birute Daskeviciene, the trade union's chairwoman, confirmed to BNS that some of the strikers were back at work but said an estimated 100 workers remained on strike.

"We are still in the process of determining how many workers have returned to work," she told BNS. "We counted over 300 (strikers) last week and today we have about 100 of them from all shifts. The employer may have a different figure."

The union has said the strike will continue until the management signs a collective agreement on wages and other conditions.

Daskeviciene said on Monday that they were sticking to the key demand, adding that the union had over the weekend worked out a proposal for the employer to start negotiations.

"No matter how the situation develops, we have to find a solution internally," the union's leader said. "We do not know yet if the other side will come to the negotiating table."

"The strike action continues. We still have enough strength and enthusiasm," she added.
