"Iraq's determination to help Lithuania and measures taken allow us to speak about a success model that might also be applicable across the European Union for the resolution of similar crises," Landsbergis was quoted as a statement issued by the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.

"But we also see more potential for the EU and Iraq's rapprochement, political dialogue and opening-up in mutually beneficial area, including education, trade and sharing experience," he added.

Iraqi citizens last year made the majority of more than 4,000 illegal migrants who crossed into Lithuania from Belarus.

Landsbergis also thanked the Iraqi representatives for the country's active involvement in the resolution of migrant return issues, as well as regular Iraqi consular missions to Lithuania to identify Iraqi citizens, the statement reads.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the ministers also discussed measures that have proven effective in resolving migration issues, as well as the integration of Iraqis who returned voluntarily, and ways to expand bilateral cooperation.
