"We end the year with the following results: 150 km and 436 m of six-coil concertina and more than 10 km of fixed impassable fencing have been installed along the border," he posted on Facebook.

Lithuania's authorities expect a physical barrier to be in place along the entire 680-kilometer border with Belarus by next autumn, according to Kasciunas.

The lawmaker said the authorities have also signed the necessary contracts with border surveillance system installers.

"This means that by the end of next year, not only will a physical barrier protect Lithuania from authoritarian rulers who want to destroy the foundations of our society, but we will also be able to monitor our border a hundred percent. We will have full control over violations, be it illegal migration or smuggling," Kasciunas said.

"It is important to mention that the EU funding for the technological equipment of border guards will increase significantly next year, which will allow our officers to protect our country even more effectively," the MP said.

"To sum up, the implementation of all these measures will allow us to say with confidence that Lithuania will have the most modern border protection system in Europe by the end of next year. This is the strategic goal for the coming year," he added.

More than 4,200 irregular migrants have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus illegally so far this year. Lithuania and other Western countries accuse the Minsk regime of orchestrating the unprecedented migration influx, calling it "hybrid aggression".
