The Lithuanian Defense Materiel Agency and the US government last week signed a supplement to the contract on the acquisition of Javelin medium-range anti-tank weapons, according to the ministry.

The bilateral deal provides for an additional acquisition of missiles, launchers and other system equipment worth 97 million US dollars (almost 86 million euros).

The stocks are to be delivered to the Lithuanian Armed Forces between 2024 and 2028.

The US anti-tank Javelin systems provide "a particularly significant boost to Lithuania's long-term combat capabilities and deterrence", Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas said.

The additional Javelin systems will be assigned to Lithuania's Land Force units.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has said in a press release that Lithuania is buying an additional 230 Javelin FGM-148F missiles, 20 Javelin Command Launch Units (CLUs), and other equipment.

Under the original contract, worth 28 million US dollars (25 million euros), the US was to deliver 111 missiles and ten CLUs to Lithuania by 2024.

The Javelin medium-range anti-tank missile system is an advanced weapon capable of destroying targets at a distance of between 75 meters and 2.5 kilometers.
