"I know preliminarily that there is talk of [his] leaving at the beginning of January, but it is a matter of agreement between the board and the CEO," the minister told reporters.

"I don't know the final details," he added.

Kestutis Sliuzas, the chairman of the state railway company's management board, said on Tuesday that Bartuska would step down after a "transition period" in order to de-escalate the situation after Lithuania failed to halt Belarusian potash transit through the country after US sanctions against Belaruskali came into force on December 8.

Sliuzas gave no date of the CEO's resignation, however.

Bartuska, a former CEO of the state-controlled oil product and LNG terminals operator Klaipedos Nafta, has been at the helm of LTG since December 16, 2016.
