Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's call to Belarus' authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko has had an effect, too, according to Asta Skaisgiryte, the president's chief foreign policy adviser.

"The situation may have stabilized, but we don't think it's over," she told the public broadcaster LRT. "Merkel's call has also produced a result. Perhaps it wasn't long-term, but [...] it helped us, Poland and Latvia."

The situation is not good because there are still irregular migrants in Belarus and there remain issues about the EU's migration policy and the construction of a physical barrier, according to the advisor.

"As far as I know, more than 3,000 [migrants] have been flown [out of Belarus]. Of course, these are only a part of those who have arrived, so we are not saying that the situation is good, full stop," Skaisgiryte said.

"On the contrary, there are still issues regarding changes in EU legislation and the construction of the physical barrier," she said, adding that "the president intends to raise them at next week's European Council meeting."

Lithuanian border guards turned away 65 irregular migrants on Wednesday after recording no attempts to cross the border illegally the day before.

More than 4,200 irregular migrants have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus illegally this year. Lithuania and other Western countries accuse the Minsk regime of orchestrating the unprecedented migration influx, calling it "hybrid aggression".

Over 7,900 migrants have been prevented from entering Lithuania at non-designated places since early August when border guards were given the right to turn such people back to Belarus. However, the number may include repeated attempts by the same people to cross the border.
