"Taking into account the fact that not only we but also other countries have a growing number of cases even among vaccinated people, (…) we back the nine-month position, but the situation should be clearer on Monday since a wider presentation will take place and every country will express its opinion," she told journalists on Friday.

On Thursday, the European Commission resented its recommendations to change the existing EU digital COVID-19 certificate system to allow vaccinated Europeans to freely travel within the EU nine months after the second vaccine dose.

The announcement comes amid a surge of coronavirus cases across Europe and concern that the virus might again pose threat to the inter-state movement.

Such a period is being proposed taking into account the recommendations of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control's recommendation to have a booster jab six months after the second dose, and also to give countries additional three months to adjust their vaccine rollouts.

Following the booster jab, the EU certificate's validity period would be unlimited.

The EU introduced its digital COVID-19 certificates in July.

The EC's recommendations need approval from member states and the European Parliament.
