According to the authors of the statement, prestigious sporting events cannot take place in authoritarian states that do not respect human rights and use sport to improve their image.

"We appeal to the president, the government and all Lithuanian politicians to boycott the Chinese Olympic Games, not to participate in the opening and closing events, and not to send any official state delegation," the letter reads.

The 17 MPs also called on athletes who won the right to compete in the Beijing Olympics to "demonstrate a civic stance" and not to participate in the games "where attempts will be made to turn them into puppets in a spectacle orchestrated by the authoritarian regime".

Relations between Lithuania and China, which have been deteriorating in recent years, has reached new lows with the opening of a Taiwanese representative office in Vilnius.
