"The rest of the financial aid will reach us later. It is intended to cover the costs incurred by Lithuania in the management of irregular migration and to ensure the provision of basic services to migrants who have entered Lithuania," Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite said.
The Commission's funds will be used to cover Lithuania's costs related to the accommodation of migrants, and their security, food and education, as well as reception and detention facilities, asylum procedures and other essential services.
Some of the money will also be used for salary supplements to officers working in migrant camps and ensuring their security.
Over 4,100 migrants have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus illegally so far this year. Vilnius accuses the Minsk regime of orchestrating the unprecedented migration influx, calling it "hybrid aggression".
