Around 2,000 people marched along the city's Laisves Avenue amid heavy police presence. The event, the first of its kind in Kaunas, was aimed at raising awareness of the problems faced by LGBTQ+ people.
"We are glad that the march in the city went smoothly, without any major incidents," Kaunas County Police said in a press release.
However, the police said earlier that a smoke cartridge was thrown into the hood of a man's jacket and another man was hit at around 3 p.m. on Saturday after the march had already ended.
Twenty-two people aged between 18 and 53 years were taken to police stations on Saturday and sixteen are facing fines of up to 140 euros for administrative offences, such as being drunk or drinking in public, disturbing public order, or failing to obey police orders, according to Monday's press release.
"The officers thank the citizens who expressed their position peacefully, respectfully and without violence," it said.
The police said on Sunday that one of the pre-trial investigations had been launched into incitement to hatred and the other four into public order violations.
They said a person had been detained for approaching and filming the march's participants and inciting hatred by mocking, insulting and swearing at them.
