"As for compulsory vaccination, yes, we agree that for certain professions compulsory vaccination or unavoidable vaccination is the only alternative if we want a smooth process," the president told reporters.

"And we want a smooth process in our education and in our health system," he said. "We need to [...] understand that the Delta strain poses additional challenges to the health of our society."

With the share of vaccinated adults approaching the earlier target of 70 percent, Lithuania should aim for a more ambitious goal of 90 percent, according to Nauseda.

"I think the ambition should be even higher, as scientists believe that the vaccination rate should be at least 90 percent," the president said.

"Of course, under the Delta conditions, 90 percent is a target guidance, but we can only reach it if we all agree together that vaccination is currently the only way of achieving the health care goals we have set for ourselves."

Official statistics show that 69.5 percent of Lithuania's adult population have received at least one coronavirus vaccine shot.

Nauseda noted that the country would reach the 70-percent threshold one and a half months later than expected.

Lithuania has so far administered at least one dose to over 1.6 million people and has fully vaccinated almost 1.5 million.
