Kaunas hopes to complete stadium reconstruction by spring 2022

The reconstruction of the Darius and Girenas Stadium in Lithuania's second-largest city of Kaunas is expected to be completed by the spring of 2022, Mayor Visvaldas Matijosaitis says.

"Under our plan, and we spoke with the director of Autokausta (the stadium's building contractor – BNS) yesterday, and we need to complete it by April or early May (of 2022 – BNS). We should hold a nice event there in June," the mayor told the national radio LRT on Friday.

There are no plans to seek the national status for this stadium, Matijosaitis added.

Turkey's Kayi Construction was initially in charge of the reconstruction of the Darius and Girenas Stadium but the contract with this company was terminated in January, 2020 as it failed to meet its commitments.

Then, Autokausta took the project over, worth around 32 million euros.
