The number of migrants detained while attempting to cross in from Belarus has fallen sharply in recent days after border guards were allowed to turn them around and divert them to official border checkpoints.

Rokas Pukinskas, a spokesman for the State Border Guard Service, confirmed to BNS that over 100 migrants had been pushed back in the past 24 hours.

A total of 4,112 irregular migrants – mostly Iraqi citizens – have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus so far this year, according to the latest figures from Statistics Lithuania.

Lithuania has declared a state-level extreme over the migrant crisis which it blames on the Belarusian regime.
