"There are all sorts of fence-building experiences, and such a fence would probably be a non-conventional solution, and, probably, other solutions could be considered. But if someone now thinks that the government will build a fence from the starting point of the Lithuanian border to another, so definitely not, as we would spend a lot of time and we need to resolve problems now," she told journalists at the parliament on Thursday.

"Smart technology is being introduced, we are stepping up the introduction and we’ll try to do that next year. If some other solutions could be introduced in specific sections, and we have such sections, so they will be introduced, but I definitely cannot promise that we will fence ourselves off," she added.

Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite said on Wednesday the ministry and other institutions are looking into possibilities to build a fence on the country's border with Belarus at a cost of 15 million euros.

Lithuania has a 680-km land border with Belarus, with a fence installed in a section of 78 km only and CCTV monitoring 39 percent of the border.

Almost 400 illegal migrants have been detained in Lithuania after illegally crossing from Belarus, which is five times more than over the whole year of 2020.
