The detained persons provided their Iraqi passports and had no Schengen visas and asked for asylum in Lithuania, the country's State Border Guard Service said on Monday.
The persons are now undergoing COVID-19 tests and following their results, initial action as part of the asylum provision procedure will be started.
On the morning of the same day, the same Lithuanian border guards also detained three Afghanistan citizens who had tried to enter Lithuanian from Belarus.
Lithuania has recently seen a rise in the number of illegal migrants entering the country from Belarus, which led to the decision to get the Public Security Service and members of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union involved in the protection of the border.
More than 280 illegal migrants, mainly Iraqis, have tried to enter Lithuania from Belarus up until now this year. The number is more than triple of the 2020 figure.
