"Speaking of Easter, it’s fairly too soon to speak as we don’t know what surprises the British variant could bring, judging from what neighbors are going through," Grigas told journalists on Tuesday.

"In terms of the epidemiological situation, no decisions have been made yet. I believe it's too soon to do that. We will look into the pre-Easter epidemiological situation and then decide," he added.

In his words, further relaxations will also depend on the spread of the UK variant. "We will look how this virus, this variant, which is already in Lithuania, will be acting. (…) Of course, we need to be focused on that," Grigas said.

Experts are also watching the situation around the spread of this variant on Estonia and Poland. "As the foreign example show, and you know what's now happening in Estonia and a similar scenario has started in Poland, so in fact we should think about it and the expert group has that in mind," he said.

Easter will be celebrated on April 4-5 this year and that will be a long three-day weekend.

Record-high case rates are being now being recorded in Estonia, and the country reported over 1,500 new COVID-19 cases last Saturday. Due to the fast spread of the UK variant, Estonia going back into strict lockdown for at least a month as of Thursday.

Thousands of new coronavirus cases every day have lately been reported in Poland.
