"It seems that the current downward trends (in new coronavirus infections) will allow us to relax the mask-wearing requirement, leaving it as a recommendation," the minister said on Lietuvos Rytas TV on Thursday evening.

"I can't give you a date now, but I think there should be some news in about a week," he added.

Dulkys also said that the Cabinet might next week consider easing the restrictions on travel between municipalities.

Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte has said recently that the government may consider allowing travel within the so-called "inner-ring" municipalities.

The mandatory wearing of face coverings in public places was reintroduced in Lithuania in early November when the country was placed under a second lockdown amid spiking coronavirus cases.

The government tightened the lockdown in mid-December, banning non-essential travel between municipalities.

In late January, the lockdown was extended until March 1.

However, hairdressers, beauty and massage salons and small non-grocery stores with direct street access have been allowed to reopen as of last Monday.
