The prime minister expects the Cabinet to decide on lockdown easing steps next Monday.

Her Facebook post came in response to criticism of the Cabinet's decision not to discuss the easing of coronavirus restrictions on Wednesday.

Health Minister Arunas Dulkys said after Monday's meeting of the government's emergency commission that he would propose that the Cabinet on Wednesday consider allowing non-essential shops with direct access from the street and hairdressers and beauty salons to reopen.

However, the issue was not included into the agenda after a group of experts advising the government on the pandemic recommended keeping the current restrictions in place.

"I regret that public discussions (...) were taken by some as adopted decisions," Simonyte wrote.

"I have no doubt that on Monday, we will be able to agree in principle on lockdown easing steps," she said.

"It is very important to get children back to school as soon as possible. The wish to return to normal business activities is understandable, but it is even more important not to fall into the trap of the yo-yo effect."

"Will there be any changes to the lockdown regulation next week? It is likely if the agreed lockdown easing plan allows it and if our downward curve in cases becomes even more pronounced."

"And tonight I apologize for the expectations that should not have been raised. I think it is still more pleasant to apologize for this than for the decisions that need to be reversed," Simonyte added.

Although the epidemiological situation in Lithuania is improving, it remains fragile, according to the prime minister.

As of Wednesday, Lithuania's 14-day coronavirus infection rate stood at 414.9 per 100,000 people.
