"Today we invite Lithuanian people to symbolically turn off the festive decorations and switch off Christmas tree lights from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. to honor the direct and indirect victims of COVID-19," the center posted on Facebook.

The organizers invite everyone to stop and think about those "for whom this pandemic has become a period of loss or hardship", it said.

All Lithuanian cities and towns will turn off the lights of their central Christmas trees and other festive decorations on the streets, the organizers said.

Shops and other businesses and organizations, and people are expected to turn off their Christmas lights, too, they said.

A total of 120,940 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Lithuania so far. The virus has claimed 1,143 lives, according to the latest figures released on Wednesday morning.
