The checkpoints will be in place from 1 p.m. on Wednesday to 9 p.m. on December 27.

Meanwhile, the government will consider allowing travel between cities and surrounding municipalities, a proposal that police say would help prevent traffic jams and lighten the load on police officers.

The Cabinet will also discuss a proposal to limit the number of people travelling in a car to two, unless they were members of the same household.

In a bid to stem the spread of the coronavirus, the government has banned non-essential travel between municipalities from December 16 to January 3 to deter people from visiting their relatives and friends during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Police have decided to conduct mass checks during the weekends and holidays,

Only people going to work, visiting doctors or attending funerals are allowed to travel. They are advised to have supporting documents to prove their purpose of travel.
