A lack of qualified workers, facilitated employment or posting of citizens of third countries provide more opportunities but dishonest employers often use a cheap workforce to avoid taxes, Jonas Gricius of the inspectorate says.

"Moreover, there were cases when there were doubts on whether workers had really been posted and whether they were paid under the set rules, as there were cases when foreigners don’t even know who they work for," Gricius said in a statement.

There were 1,010 people illegally working over the past six months, and 3,600 people were checked. The majority of them worked in the construction, trade or agriculture sectors.

And the number of illegally employed foreigners has gone up from 71 last year to 102. The majority of them worked in the construction sector.
